| August 15--Solemnity of the Assumption |
| Spiritual Reflections | |||

I have to admit that I love the feast of the Assumption. There are memories of trips to the beach to go swimming because of the family tradition that said there was a healing in the water; memories of blessing the fields and the summer harvest; memories of processions around the church property with a statute of Our Lady. Why do such things make such an impression? Perhaps with the customs and ceremonies that play on in my head, I grew in an appreciation of the celebration. The Blessed Mother has always been important in my life. She has been a powerful intercessor and friend. There has always been a sense of comfort when I enter into moments of prayer with her, knowing that she hears those prayers with a mother's ear and who loves with a mother's heart. Today, we celebrate Mary's glorious assumption into heaven--her reward for her fidelity to God and obedience to His holy will. We look forward to the day when we shall share in that same glory and participate in the perfect love of God in His kingdom.
